The Unconscious, A Very Fast Ally

The unconscious, a very fast ally

The unconscious is one of the fundamental pillars of Sigmund Freud’s theory. It has entered our vocabulary becoming an everyday concept, perhaps because it allows us to blame someone else, because it serves as an excuse for some mistakes made. This unconscious, somewhat dark that psychoanalytic theory showed us, possessing our most unspeakable drives, is giving way to a very different idea through the latest studies, both in neurology and psychology.

Each of us is aware of its existence, even if only its results reach us. For example: if we want to find something that we have lost and no matter how hard we look for it, we cannot find it, if we are able to relax and let the unconscious work, as if by magic a clear message comes to our mind that tells us where that thing is. we were looking for. That information is a thing of what we know as the unconscious.

Two ways of working with information: the conscious and the unconscious

One of the most noticeable differences between the conscious and the unconscious is speed. Let’s say that, approximately, we would need about 4 years of our life if we used the conscious to make the comparisons that the unconscious is capable of analyzing in approximately 10 minutes. The unconscious is much faster, much faster. It allows us to process things in a much shorter time.

It is a great ally when making decisions, since it can mobilize large amounts of information allowing us to decide based on multiple criteria. In addition, it allows us to easily perform complex tasks, such as driving, reading, communicating … It also helps to control our emotions and distinguish the emotions of those around us.

The unconscious and freedom of choice

We are increasingly sure that most of the things we do throughout the day are the work of the unconscious. This statement can give us a bit of vertigo … and, then, what about consciousness, with freedom of choice? It would be good for us to reassure ourselves, everything that was stored in the unconscious passed through the conscious before; it is part of our experience and our way of doing and living life.

They are knowledge that was introduced within this format because that way they are more useful; What would be of us if we had to think about all the things we do! Try, if you want, with some elementary task and you will see how clumsy we become: try to climb a ladder thinking about what you do and how you do it.

The unconscious is a good ally. What scares us is that we do not know how he elaborates the information, we can only receive his work once it is finished, and it is very possible that that desire for control that dominates us is the one that obfuscates us before his behavior.

It would be appropriate not to forget that it is limited to giving us the information elaborated, then, we, have the power to use it or not. If we become aware of its usefulness and realize that it is an extraordinary ally, we will begin to trust its capabilities and cooperation will become more and more productive and solid, thus facilitating success in our objectives.

Have you ever been aware of how the unconscious acts on you?
