Leaving Everything For Later Is Too Late

The popular phrase “do not leave for tomorrow what you can do today” hides an absolute truth: the fact of procrastination can become a big problem. We reflect on this a bit below.
Leaving everything for later is too late

On many occasions in our life we leave what we have pending for later. It can be a small task, small steps towards a goal or our decision making. We can be living accumulating tasks, obligations or wishes.

Thus, time passes, and what one day we said we would do remains pending and with no date to be determined, becoming an “I have to …” without end. Sometimes it may not create too many difficulties, however in others it may be too late later.

I will do it later

It is true that our day to day can be loaded with things to do, which prevent us from taking everything forward, we are not a superhero or superheroine. It is normal that sometimes we can not do everything, so it  is better to do less and well, than many and badly.

But when we leave many things for later and they accumulate, we can experience high levels of anxiety and discomfort regarding the concept we have about ourselves. We have  anxiety when we leave many doors unlocked and ends untied.

We may also be making the mistake of overestimating the time and effort we think it will take to do something. We may think that it will take longer than we would actually invest. Sometimes we take longer to think about it than to do it, keep that in mind.

It’s almost never late, but don’t leave it for later

All or almost all decisions go through a logical decision-making process. With the influence of our emotions, of course. The truth is that sometimes, overthinking it means imagining possible endings and, almost always, all bad ones.

And so we let the days go by. Thinking and thinking that the day will come when something will change without leaving the sofa. And of course, that day never comes. Knowing that everything that is in our power can be changed if we ourselves start.

Nor is time an important value. It is true that there are irrecoverable things that have already happened, we can only learn from that with the conviction that we all make mistakes. But it is never too late to change things that we can still solve, you just have to try.

Talking with someone with whom we have not spoken for a long time, solving conflicts from the past, resuming that passion that made us happy or fulfilling the achievable dreams that we have aimed for are only possible if we get moving. Let’s go ahead.

Repeated behavior becomes a habit

A habit is a custom or practice acquired by the frequency of repetition of an act. We can acquire healthy and beneficial habits or, however, habits that do not favor us at all. The key is in the beginning and, above all, in persistence.

Habits arise because the brain is always looking for a way to save energy, so its natural tendency is to turn almost any situation already experienced into a routine. The problem is that the brain does not differentiate between good and bad habits.

Here are some tips to start a habit:

  • Think about developing a habit that is healthy and write a list of reasons for doing it.
  • Mark the day on a calendar that is visible in a place in your home.
  • Prepare in advance everything you need to get started.
  • Keep in mind that implementing a habit in your life requires time and persistence.
  • Make small changes and don’t try to change everything at once.
  • Knowing that “relapsing” to stop doing a habit is not a failure, it is just a “relapse”
